Personal Life and Career

Alec Baldwin was born on April 3, 1958 in Amityville, New York. He had two sisters, Beth and Jane, and three brothers Daniel, William, and Stephen. The brothers all became Hollywood actors and were referred to as the Baldwin brothers. Alec was the eldest among the four boys.

The young Alec started working at the age of 12, washing cars and doing odd jobs. At one point in his life, he was a bus boy. He was motivated by working at an early age because he knew his father, a schoolteacher, wasn’t able to make enough for his family.

But when he went to college and transferred to New York University’s Tish School of Fine Arts, he was later accepted as a member of the Actors Studio, a membership organization of professional actors.

In his first film debut in 1987, Forever, Lulu, Baldwin played a minor role. But come 1988, Beetlejuice and Working Girl, helped him gain recognition. His first lead role was in the movie, The Hunt for the Red October. He played the character, Jack Ryan.

The book discusses a highly contested subject and how there is still life after it.

Alcoholism and Other Addictions

Alec Baldwin’s twenties, was as he recounted, a dark period of his life. He became an alcoholic, drug addict and video game addict. Whether it was the rough childhood that he had, his friends growing up, his sudden rise to fame, the influence of other drug users in Hollywood – the reason he did not specify.

Alec was not the only one in the Baldwin Brothers who became a drug and alcohol addict. Daniel and Stephen admitted to using drugs as well.

Daniel was even famously arrested in 1998 for cocaine possession. According to reports, police caught him running naked down the halls of the Plaza Hotel yelling “Baldwin!”

In 2007, Daniel talked about his cocaine addiction in ABC’S Primetime. In the show, Daniel revealed, “I’m a straight-up cocaine addict. I don’t really drink very much, although I have abused alcohol in the past. And I don’t use any other drugs. I don’t take pills. I don’t do anything. I’m a … diehard coke head.”

The show followed Daniel’s progress through drug rehabilitation. Daniel shared the personal issues that may cause his ninth time he sought alcohol treatment. Primetime hoped the viewers would learn from it.

Even the youngest of the Baldwin brothers admitted to being a drug addict for several years and declared bankruptcy, That was until his Brazilian housekeeper convinced him to let Jesus into his life and also sought alcohol treatment. Now, Stephen is a Christian Evangelist.

Alcoholism is the most severe form of alcohol abuse. At this point, the person can no longer manage their drinking habits. Alec, in his twenties, was already in a situation where he put himself in danger that could have lead to legal and social problems.

The award-winning actor discussed his addiction to alcohol, drugs and video games in the essay A Moment of Clarity, that was published in 2013 along with other essays on addiction and those who sought alcohol treatment later on. Baldwin admitted that for most of his twenties, he was an alcoholic who did drugs and was addicted to the video game, Galaga, which he would play for hours at an arcade.

According to the actor, he would wait for the arcade’s operator, a man named Julian watch him when he would put the key in the lock and open the door. One time, Julian commented, ‘Wow, I’m glad I’m not you.’ Apparently, those comments would lead Alec to want to sober up. He sought alcohol treatment because of these little moments of clarity.

Baldwin continues on in the essay, “You got no idea, Julian. Julian, I need you. I need you to get that key and open the f- – -ing door and let me in. I got to play ‘Galaga.’ ”

In the same essay, Baldwin recalled how he used to drive his car with a plastic cup filled with ice and wine. He even noticed that other drivers were drinking coffee and not alcohol.

Then on his 27th birthday, he joined a support group and sought alcohol treatment that led to his sobriety up until today. According to Baldwin, it was God who got him sober and that he appeared to

Baldwin’s new book, Nevertheless, was released a day after the interview with Stephanopolous. Going back to the actor’s interview in Good Morning America, Baldwin talked about the book where he discussed his childhood, his obsession with work and money and his addiction to alcohol and drugs and how he sought alcohol treatment.

He started writing the book because he was paid to do so, Baldwin admitted on the book’a preface. Later on, in the process of writing Nevertheless, he found that it had become an avenue for him to discuss the things that troubled him when he much younger, how his personal story progressed into alcoholism and so on until he sought alcohol treatment.

He remembers his mom sitting down on the kitchen floor crying. She took Alec’s sister’s earning selling girl scouts cookies. That his mother would only stop crying when she took the money Alec earned through odd jobs.

“I just was obsessed with work and making money ’cause of my dad,” Baldwin said. “They wanted to be happy and they were crushed by debt and money … and that really drove me nuts.

He explained that for what seemed like his whole life, he would worry about making enough money for his family and especially his father.

‘I got to make money, I got to make money, I got to make money. Don’t want to be like my Dad, don’t want to be like my Dad,” he added.

Balwin also told Stephanopolous in the interview that he once overdosed. “I have no idea what is happening … there’s a pop inside my chest … then I black out.” What he describes, he knew was an overdose. He sought alcohol treatment because of it.

Alec Baldwin recounts, that in a way, he was thankful for that overdose. He said that he was glad it happened when he was much younger because it was not common for young to want to sober up. If it did not happen, he would not have sought alcohol treatment right away.
